Elouise M. Bell

Elouise M. Bell is Professor Emeritus of English and former Associate Dean of General and Honors Education at Brigham Young University, where she taught from 1963-1994. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and journalism at the University of Arizona, graduating magna cum laude, and earned her M.A. at BYU. Her publications include essays, reviews, stories, and poems in such periodicals as English Journal, Women Studies Quarterly, BYU Studies, Network, Dialogue, Sunstone, and The Ensign. In her professional capacity she speaks throughout the state on subjects such as poetry, journal-keeping, and feminist issues. In 1983, the Utah Women's Political Caucus honored her with a Susa Young Gates Award for "contributing to human rights and the cause of women." In 1986, she received BYU's Alcuin Award for excellence in teaching, and in 1990, she was awarded a General Education Professorship for contributions to the university's general education curriculum. A collection of her essays, Only When I Laugh, received the 1990 AML award for Personal Essay. In recent years, Bell has performed a one-woman play, "Aunt Patty Remembers," throughout the Western states. Ms. Bell wrote the play based on research in the journals of Mormon midwife and pioneer Patty Bartlett Sessions.
