Transfer Students

Welcome to the College of Humanities Advisement Center. We want to help ease your transition to BYU. If you have questions after you have read through the information below, please contact the Humanities Advisement Center. We will be happy to help with any of your concerns.

Major/Minor Course Transfer Matrix

matrixClick here to view the BYU Course Transfer Matrix

A matrix of transfer course equivalencies from the consortium schools (BYU-Idaho, LDS Business College, College of Eastern Utah, Dixie State College, Mesa Community College, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, and Utah Valley University) as well as BYU-Hawaii, Southern Utah University, University of Utah, and Weber State College is maintained for major courses in the College of Humanities. Access the matrix to see if a course is equivalent to a major course at BYU. For courses not included in the matrix, submit a course description to Paula Landon to have the equivalency determined.

If a transfer course listed on the matrix as equivalent to a major course does not appear on your progress report at BYU once BYU has received your transcript with course grades posted, contact Paula Landon by email at Paula_Landon@byu.edu or call (801) 422-4741.

For questions about transfer course equivalencies for General Education requirements that will fill the University Core requirements, contact the Transfer Office by email at transfer@byu.edu or call (801) 422-6575.

College of Humanities Orientation

You are especially invited to the College of Humanities Orientation. It is held the Friday before Fall Semester. Contact the Humanities Advisement Center for the date and time.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation will include information tailored for transfer students. Contact New Student Orientation for dates and further information.

Transfer Students With an Associate of Arts or Sciences Degree

If you have or will be earning an Associates of Arts or Sciences degree at another institution, you need to have a transcript with your degree posted to it sent to BYU Admissions. If you have earned your degree from one of the consortium schools (BYU-Idaho, LDS Business College, College of Eastern Utah, Dixie State College, Mesa Community College, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Utah Valley University), your associates degree will complete your GE requirements at BYU except Advanced Writing, Languages of Learning, the Religion required courses (Book of Mormon, New Testament, and Doctrine & Covenants) and Religion residency hours. If you have or will be earning an Associates of Arts or Sciences degree at a school that is not part of the consortium, you will be required to also complete the American Heritage requirement in addition to the requirements listed above to complete your University Core requirements.

Transfer Students Without an Associate of Arts or Sciences Degree

If you are transferring to BYU without an Associates of Arts or Sciences, your transfer equivalencies will be determined course by course by the Transfer Office for University Core requirements. Transfer equivalencies will be built on your Progress Report for access through Route Y. If you feel you have taken a course that you have not been given equivalency credit for GE requirements, contact the Transfer Office by email at transfer@byu.edu or call (801) 422-6575.

Transfer for Major/Minor Courses

If you have taken courses in your major subject and the transfer equivalency does not appear on your Progress Report, contact Paula Landon. You will be asked to submit a course description of the course(s) you have taken or plan to take. The major department will determine the equivalency, and the information will be saved in your file.

Transfer of Religion Hours

Religion courses taken at BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii, or through LDS Institutes, if taken for a grade and credit, will transfer to fill the four required courses at BYU (Book of Mormon, RelA 121 and RelA 122; New Testament, either RelA 211 or 212, and/or Doctrine & Covenants, RelC 324 or 325). However, Religion hours taken at another institution will NOT fill the Religion Hours in Residency at BYU. Religion Hours in Residency at BYU are determined by the total number of hours of transfer credit. Access the Religious Education information in the catalog or contact the Humanities Advisement Center for clarification.
