  • If you would like a larger selection of foreign language children's books, we recommend that you contact local bookstores that sell foreign language children's books and then ask the children's book buyer to show you the catalogs that they have.

Do-It-Yourself Ideas
Public Libraries
  • You can go to your local public library and search for children's books (and music cassettes and videos) in your target foreign language. Even if they don't have them in the branch near you, you should be able to search other libraries and borrow. Many public libraries and some public elementary schools have at least some music tapes and books in a variety of foreign languages. Many university libraries also have decent children's foreign language sections.
  • Request your local library purchase more children's book in your target foreign language.
Material Development at Home
  • Books
    • I've made some of my own do-it-yourself books on my computer. I bought a whole box of "protector sheets" (the heaviest kind I could find, non-glare) and a box of card stock paper to fit into the standard paper-sized protector sheets. I printed clip art from the computer (just the outline of the clipart--no gray shading) onto the cardstock and colored it in with bright markers. I slip the paper in the the protector sheets and use metal rings to "bind" together the pages. I've made a counting book using this method and a color book. The counting book counts balls, first page "one soccer ball," second page "two footballs," third page "three basketballs," etc. The color book has a bouquet of balloons in a different color on each page--not really exciting--but Jeremie (21 months) seems to really enjoy the books and they seem to be helping him to learn numbers and colors. I also made another book with family pictures on each page. (Same binding method as above--printing family vocabulary on cardstock and mounting color photocopies of family pictures onto cardstock before slipping the paper into the protector sheets.) First page--pictures of my son at progressive ages, second page--pictures of us (his parents), third page--pictures of grandparents, fourth/fives pages--pictures of great-grandparents (all of them, even those who have passed away), six/seventh pages--pictures of aunts and uncles, eight/ninth pages--pictures of friends. Jeremie loves this book and is learning who all his relatives that he never gets to see are and the vocabulary to talk about them.
    • Use file labels, printed with your target foreign language, to cover up vocabulary words in picture books.
  • Videos
    • Film your infant/toddler interacting with other children/adults who speak your target foreign language. Your very young child will enjoy watching this.
