Biography:
Deirdre Paulsen knows that writing can be rewarding, cathartic, and exploratory… but that it isn’t easy. She sees herself as a cheerleader to celebrate your successes. She focuses on writing to help you find your voice, experimenting with kinds of writing that you might not have learned in high school — personal narrative, research focusing on family history, and the creative process. You choose your topics and you will improve through peer review and revision. In addition, you will become evaluators for a high school English class, write about service to the community, define yourself, and submit something for publication (can be to a church publication or any other venue, to a contest, or to a conference). Deirdre has taught in BYU’s Honors Program for fifteen years and has had great experiences at BYU, starting the Writing Fellows program and co-directing the Publication Lab. She loves international travel and was the folklore consultant on an award winning documentary, “Russia: Hidden Memory.” She has lived in France and in Brazil (and grew up in New Jersey, almost a foreign country!). Deirdre currently lives in Salt Lake City, is the mother of five, and loves to bike and ski. Her husband is in charge of temple construction in Central and South America. In addition to H150, she has recently taught Mormon Folklore, Introduction to Folklore, Writing for Publication, and Ethnographic Writing.
Interests:
Folklore Studies and studies in Composition and Rhetoric (whether or not AP courses in high school can substitute for college composition courses).
