Biography: Jane Brady has been teaching Honors 150 since the fall of 1999. Though she has taught other classes at BYU and at UVSC, Honors 150 is her favorite class by far. She loves the extra opportunities that the Honors program affords, including cultural events and enhancement activities. Often her class comes to her house for dinner during the course of the semester and she likes to provide other opportunities to get together outside of the classroom experience. Service learning is an integral part of Jane's Honors 150 class. Students are expected to complete at least fifteen hours on a service project of their choice and then translate that experience into a research proposal, research paper, and presentation. It is a great way to finish the semester to have each student share in their presentation what they have been working on over the course of the semester. Students are encouraged to make their presentations creative and interactive. The class has weekly assignments on our class bulletin board in order to provide an opportunity for more casual writing assignments. Another interesting component of the class is the assignment to write an article for Meridian Magazine (www.meridianmagazine.com). After nailing down the target audience and picking subject matter that will appeal to that audience, students greatly increase their chances of publication. The class also reviews past articles former students have published. The publication rate for the class is over 60%!
