Meet Emily . She is the eighth of ten children. She is a twin. Her twin brother is named Brian. Emily is 18 years old. She and her twin brother just graduated from high school and now attend college.
Emily likes to study, debate, sing, and speed talk. In fact, she has met the world's record for speed talking. She also likes to compete in beauty pageants. Last year Emily won the Miss Orem Teen-USA Pageant. She received some money for wardrobe and scholarships. She participated in many parades and other public appearances.
This year Emily was selected to be a member of the Royalty of the Days of '47 Celebration in the state of Utah. This celebration commemorates the Mormon pioneers who first came to settle the territory of Utah in 1847.
I asked Emily to tell me how she feels about her experiences and to comment on her future plans.
Emily: "Participating in pageants has been a wonderful experience. I have met many new friends. It has helped me gain confidence in myself and develop my talents. It has also taught me humility and given me a desire to serve other people."
"In the future I plan to attend the university and study film and broadcasting. I also hope to serve a mission for my church. After my mission I hope to marry and raise a family. I encourage you to always have faith in yourself and do your best."
Some of Emily's ancestors came from Switzerland and England. Her great grandfather
and his family immigrated from Switzerland in 1872. They settled in a small
town east of Salt Lake City , Utah. The many mountains and high peaks in the
area reminded them of their native Switzerland. Sometimes it is referred to
as the Alps of Utah. Emily is proud of her heritage. She learned to yodel and
has performed this talent many times. She hopes to travel to Switzerland some
day to see the land of her forefathers.
