    Statement - Question

Remember that in Lesson Three you learned to make yes/no questions by putting a form of the "to be" verb (am, is, are) in the front of the subject, like this:
    Is Juan from Venezuela?
All of the statements below have a form of the verb "to be." The "wh" word comes first in the sentence, followed by "is."

    Juan is in the class.
    This is the ESL class.
    The class is at 7:00.
The class is at the church.
    Who is in the class?
    What is this?
    When is the class?
    Where is the class?
Some sentences do not have a form of the verb "to be" in them. Then we use another helping verb, like "can", or "will", or a form of "do." For example:

    Sandra can speak English.
    Jane will be baptized Saturday.
Juan lives in the United States.
The Elders teach at the church.
    Who can speak English?
    When will Jane be baptized?
    Where does Juan live?
    What do the Elders teach?
In the last two sentences there is not helping verb, so a form of the helping verb "do" is added. Notice that in the third sentence, an "s" is added to the verb, "Juan lives." In the questions, the "s" and an "e" is added to do, and "s" is dropped from "lives." "Where does Juan live?"
