MAKING INTRODUCTIONS

Julio: Juan is doing well, and he's been learning more English at home. This evening he's going to his first English class with Mom and Dad. Then, I think he'll go to church with us. .. Our church is new to him. I think he'll have lots of questions. Let's see. As you watch, look for Juan's questions. Then see if Juan finds the answers.
Juan: Who are these people?
Elizabeth: Good afternoon, Brother and Sister Martinez. How are you this evening?
Gloria: Fine.
Luis: Fine.
Gloria: I want you to meet our son. This is Juan. He came from Venezuela one month ago.
Elizabeth: It's nice to have you here. I'm Sister Huntington.
Juan: Um, nice to meet you.
Li Hua: Pardon me, Sister Huntington.
Elizabeth: Oh, excuse me.
Li Hua: How do you say...?
Elizabeth: Direct. To direct music. D-I-R-E-C-T.
Li Hua: Thank you.
Elizabeth: You're welcome.
Pierre: What does "Redeemer" mean?
Anna: It means, "Savior," "Jesus.
Pierre: Oh, I remember. Thank you.
Anna: You're welcome.
Li Hua: Good evening. Welcome to our ESL class. We will begin by singing hymn number 136, "I Know that My Redeemer Lives.
Li Hua: Sister Petkov will direct the music. Brother Martinez will give the opening prayer.
Class: I know that my Redeemer lives. What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, he lives who once was dead.
He lives my ever living Head.
He lives to bless me with his love.
He lives to plead for me above.
He lives my hungry soul to feed.
He lives to bless in time of need.
Luis: Heavenly Father, we thank thee for the gospel and for our families. We ask thee to bless us and help us to learn English. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Li Hua: Today we have a new member of our class. Would you stand and introduce yourself?
Juan: Um. My name's Juan Martinet. Um. These are my parents. Uh. I live with them and my brother Julio and his family.
Li Hua: We are very pleased to have you in our class. Let's introduce ourselves. I'11 start. My name is Li Hua Wong. I'm from China, and I'm the class president today. And now, Brother Toelupe...
Lopati: I'm Lopati Toelupe. I'm from Samoa. Nice to meet you.
Anna: I'm Anna Petkov. I'm from Bulgaria. I'm glad to meet you.
Pierre: My name is Pierre Pelissie. I'm from Haiti.
Elizabeth: And I'm Elizabeth Huntington. I'm the teacher. Welcome to our class.
Juan: Oh, I'm glad to know their names.
Li Hua: Now, Lopati Toelupe will give the spiritual thought.
Lopati: This is Joseph Smith. In the year 1820, Joseph Smith lived in New York. He didn't know which church was true. He read in the Bible to ask God for help. Joseph went to a grove of trees. He prayed to Heavenly Father. Heavenly Father and Jesus came to him. They talked to him. Joseph asked which church he should join. Jesus said, "None of them." I know that God lives. I know that Joseph Smith saw the Father and the Son. I know that the Book of Mormon is true.
Li Hua: Thank you. Now, our teacher, Sister Huntington, will give the lesson. Elizabeth: Thank you, Li Hua. Now, last week we reviewed the personal pronouns. Tonight ...
Elizabeth: ... Thank you for the good class we had today. Now, Li Hua ...
Li Hua: Thank you for that lesson, Sister Huntington. Here are the assignments for next time: Brother Martinez will be the class president, Brother Pelissie will give the spiritual thought, Sister Martinet will give the opening prayer, and Sister Petkov will give the closing prayer. Now Brother Pelissie will give the closing prayer.
Pierre: Heavenly Father, we thank thee for this class and for our teacher. We ask thee to bless us with thy Spirit. Please help us to learn English. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Anna: Hello.
Mark: Oh, hello, Sister Petkov. How was class tonight?
Anna: Oh, it was good, as always.
Mark: Good.
Li Hua: Hi, Brother Huntington. How are you?
Mark: Oh, I'm fine, thanks. How are you?
Li Hua: I'm fine. Your wife is a good teacher.
Mark: Oh, thank you. That's what I think.
