Deborah Dean is an associate chair in the English Department with specializations in English education and composition pedagogy.

Prior to coming to BYU in 1999, Dr. Dean taught junior high and high school in Washington state. She received her master's degree in education from City University, Bellevue, and her doctorate from Seattle Pacific University. Since coming to Utah, she has volunteered as a teacher at a local high school. Her professional interests focus on helping teachers improve instruction, particularly instruction in language and writing.

Dr. Dean has a number of major publications, including the books Genre Theory: Teaching, Writing, and Being (NCTE, 2008); Bringing Grammar to Life (International Reading Association, 2007); and Strategic Writing: The Writing Process and Beyond in the Secondary English Classroom (NCTE, 2006).

When she's not teaching or writing, she likes to spend time with her children and grandchildren (reading books, making cookies, and pushing swings). She and her husband also enjoy traveling.
