I received a masters degree in Creative writing and a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Washington and then taught at Central Missouri State University for eight years. In 1980 I took the leap and quit teaching to become a full-time fiction writer. I made a living writing children's books and novels for seventeen years before accepting an offer to teach creative writing at BYU in 1997. I think of myself as a writer who teaches, not a professor who writes.
