He has published six translations of works by the Japanese Christian novelist Endo Shusaku, including: The Samurai and Scandal; the most recent, Deep River, was published by New Directions in 1995. He served as literary advisor for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's recent production of a stage adaptation of Endo's "Silence" by American playwright Steven Dietz. He is currently co-editing a two volume anthology of modern Japanese literature for Columbia University Press.
