DESCRIPTION:The ability of language contact to trigger change is a content
ious issue\, particularly as regards the grammar\; positions range from ou
tright denial to the claim that any feature can be transferred from one li
nguistic system to another. Inspection of the literature reveals that much
of the relevant evidence stems from the inherent variability particularly
salient in contact languages\, in conjunction with the reported prevalenc
e in them of nonstandard variants. Applying the variationist framework and
the comparative method of historical linguistics to massive corpora of sp
ontaneous bilingual speech\, this paper outlines a comprehensive empirical
method for detecting change in contact languages. We illustrate with ongo
ing research on the grammars of English and French\, the official language
s of Canada\, each of which\, in its minority guise\, is assumed to have u
ndergone change induced by contact with the other.

DESCRIPTION:We will be addressing that last subject more extensively at a
Humanities Center colloquium this Thursday at 11:00 in JFSB B092 (the Educ
ation in Zion Theater). Our guests will be Saree Makdisi of UCLA’s Depar
tments of English and Comparative Literature and Matthew E. Mason of BYU
’s Department of History. The theme of the discussion will be activist s
cholarship and the role of the public intellectual. Makdisi is an accompli
shed scholar as he is the author of several books and the editor of the jo
urnal Nineteenth-Century Literature\; but more to the point for this meeti
ng\, he is also a national commentator on the cultural politics of the con
temporary Arab world\, about which he has written for the Los Angeles Time
 s. (Perhaps not coincidentally\, he is also the nephew of Edward Said.) Ma
son is a scholar of early American history and is also part of an organiza
tion called Historians Against Slavery. The colloquium will take the form
of a conversation between Makdisi\, Mason\, and members of audience on the
nature of intellectual work in the public sphere and the role and place o
f activism in humanities scholarship. I hope you will join us and that you
will also invite your students to the event\, as the discussion will spea
k to how our work as humanists potentially transcends the classroom.
