Objectives

Students who graduate with a BA in Classical Studies and a Classical Civilization emphasis should be able to do the following:

  1. Read either Latin or Greek prose and verse literature with a high degree of understanding. Facility is enhanced by completion of at least two senior-level courses in the language of the student's specialization.
  2. Understand the basic history of Greece from Mycenaean civilization through Alexander the Great and the basic history of Rome from the Kings through the decline of the Empire.
  3. Understand the principles and application of ancient rhetorical theory.
  4. Understand the historical development of significant trends in both Greek and Latin Literature, from Homer to Apuleius.
  5. Understand some of the breadth of classical studies by completing a variety of courses pertaining to various aspects of that field.
