Facilities Usage Policy

The Humanities Technology and Research Support Center—formerly the Humanities Research Center—provides technical support to faculty and students in the Humanities. Located in the Joseph F. Smith Building. Direct any questions to HRC@byu.edu

The Humanities Research Center provides technogical and research support to faculty and students in the College of Humanities. Use of the facilities in the HRC, including audio, video, and computer capabilities, is without charge. A nominal fee is charged for tape duplication in the HLRC (Humanities Learning Resource Center).

Access to facilities in the HLRC is open to all university students who wish to upgrade their language skills or to complete assignments for classes within the College of Humanities. No food or drink is allowed in the HLRC, nor is the area to be used for socializing.

The following policies govern student use of the computer labs in the HRC:

  1. Access to the HRC computer labs is limited to students who are in approved classes or working on approved projects.
  2. The computers are to be used for approved projects only! Any kind of personal use, e.g. games, student papers (other than the particular class or work assignments), personal word processing, etc., is not allowed. Violations may result in loss of lab privileges. Any use of lab computers in violation of the Honor Code may result in University suspension.
  3. The room is not to be used as a study, lunchroom or a social area. Only those working at a terminal should be in the lab.
  4. Users are not to tamper with or attempt to repair any of the hardware or printers in the lab. Any problems with the equipment should be reported to one of the lab assistants, the secretary, or any full-time employee. Do not attempt to change the paper or cartridges in the printers unless you have been properly trained and granted permission to do so.
  5. Do not remove or copy any software from the HRC computer lab areas. If you do so, a loss of lab privileges may result.
  6. You may sign up for only one 2-hour block at a time. After you have used that block, you may sign up for one more block.
  7. If you do not show up by ten minutes after the hour for which you are signed up, you forfeit your time for that hour.
  8. The labs will close promptly as scheduled (including turning off the printers). This means you must begin exiting your program about ten minutes before the lab closes. Please DO NOT ask the consultants to stay late.
  9. Any student not abiding by these rules is subject to the loss of lab privileges.
