Description

Internships are offered by the Art Institute's many departments throughout the year and enable students to gain first-hand experience in their areas of interest or study. Interns, working under the guidance of curators or department heads, assist in routine departmental work that ranges from special projects and research to clerical support. Interns are undergraduate, graduate or recent college graduates. A major in art history or fine art is not essential. Internships vary from department to department; a majority of internships are offered unpaid or for academic credit. Students are responsible for making appropriate arrangements with their schools to receive credit for internships. Hours vary and are flexible; however, a minimum of 14 hours per week is generally expected.

Application Process

To apply for an internship, please submit the following: resume, cover letter, and application. Positions may be available in other areas depending on departmental needs. If you are selected as a candidate for a potential internship, we will call you to schedule an in-person or telephone interview. Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements.

Description

The objective of the internship program is to offer practical museum training experience to individuals interested in pursuing careers in the arts and museum field. Interns gain a general knowledge and broad understanding of how a particular department functions within the context of a major museum as well as specific skills related to a particular department's activities. Interns are assigned to a department based on their academic background, professional skills, interests, and career goals. Interns participate in the ongoing work of the department and complete specific projects or portions of larger departmental initiatives. Please see Departmental Descriptions for more information.

Application Process

There are four internship programs that we offer throughout the year. We offer our internships through the fall, spring, and summer semesters, as well as our academic year program. We encourage applicants to apply for placements for either three months (one semester) or six months (two semesters). Please mark this choice on your application form. Online applications are available at http://www.guggenheim.org/images/content/pdf/education/ed_internship_app09.pdf
