Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration

Essay Contest

It is well known that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a powerful force for social justice and change.  What is less known or discussed is his thoughtful and incisive work as a Christian theologian.  While we see evidence o this throughout the body of Dr. King's written and spoken work, the force of his faith is perhaps most evident in his "letter from Birmingham Jail."

We invite you to use "Letter from Birmingham Jail" (http://www.africa.upenn.edu/Articles_Gen/Letter_Birmingham.html) to write an essay of 777 words or less discussing how Dr. King;s understanding and use of Christianity work to forward his call for racial equality.

The last day to submit your essay is Friday, December 2 and it should be sent to blackhistory@byu.edu as a Word attachment. Please include the following information with your submission: your name, year in school, email address, and phone number.

The first place winner will receive $100 an the opportunity to read his/her essay at the MLK Commemoration on January 16, 2012.  The second place winners will receive $60 and $40 respectively.

Questions can be directed to blackhistory@byu.edu.
