Chinese Business Language Competition

Dec 18, 2012

The BYU Marriott School of Business recently hosted the 2012 BYU Business Language Case Competition. Universities from throughout the United States fielded teams to compete in business case analysis and presentation in a foreign language. This years competition featured both Mandarin Chinese and Spanish teams. Teams presented and were judged in three preliminary rounds with three teams from each language category advancing to the final round.

Tyson Anderson, Chris Weinberger and Zachary Wester of Brigham Young University's team Sohu took first place in the Chinese category with Indiana University placing second, and Arizona State University third. Brigham Young also placed first in the Spanish category. Zachary Wester of team Sohu described the competition as, " a great opportunity to practice professional level presentation skills in Chinese, as well as to practice business analysis and strategy methods, and to receive feedback from some very professional judges. It was a friendly atmosphere amongst all of the teams. I think everyone learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. The Marriott School did a fantastic job organizing and hosting the event."

Dr. Steven Riep, head of BYU's Chinese section, put together two teams, mostly from the students of his Chinese 347: Business Chinese class. Both Chinese teams were coached by Dr. Wang Shu-pei. Contestants came from a variety of majors and were given instruction in business case preparation before competing. This event would not have been possible were it not for the close cooperation between the faculty of the Chinese Department and the Marriott School
