FREN 101 : First-Year French, Part 1.

F, W, Sp, Su Development of the four language skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing.

FREN 102 : First-Year French, Part 2.

F, W, Sp, Su Prerequisite: Fren 101 or equivalent. Continuation of French 101.

FREN 121 : Intensive Reading in French.

Reading for research purposes, including reading skills in area of student's specialization or interest. Conducted in English. For students with little or no French. Graduate students will be graded pass/fail. Undergraduates will receive letter grades.

FREN 201 : Intermediate French, Part 1.

F, W, Sp, Su Prerequisite: Fren 102 or equivalent. Reading, writing, conversation, vocabulary building, and review of grammar.

FREN 202 : Intermediate French, Part 2.

F, W, Sp, Su; Honors also. Prerequisite: Fren 201 or equivalent. Final course for GE Foreign Language requirement (except for returned missionaries); extensive reading in French literature and culture.

FREN 211R : Second-Year Conversation.

F, W, Sp, Su Prerequisite: Fren 102 or equivalent. May be taken concurrently with Fren 201.

FREN 217 : (Fren-Ital) French and Italian Cinema.

W Background for understanding and appreciating the best of motion picture art in France and Italy. Language of instruction is English; no knowledge of French or Italian required.

F, W, Sp, Su Prerequisite: Fren 211R or instructor's consent. May be taken concurrently with Fren 340.

FREN 321 : Advanced Grammar.

F, W, Sp, Su Fren 202 or equivalent. Systematic review of French grammar and syntax.

F Prerequisite: Fren 321 or concurrent enrollment. Expository writing (narration, description, dialogue, explication de texte, etc.).

FREN 431 : Introduction to French Linguistics.

F Fren 322, 340, 361, 362. Subfields (phonetics, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics) and approaches (socio-linguistics, semiology, and pragmatics).

FREN 432 : History of French.

F Fren 431 or concurrent enrollment. Introduction to the diachronic study of French beginning with its roots in Latin.

FREN 452R : Studies in Period, Movement, and Theme.

W Prerequisite: Fren 340. Various periods and movements (e.g., medieval, classicism, romanticism) or themes (e.g., Arthur, Faust). Topics vary.

FREN 453R : Studies in Genre.

W Prerequisite: Fren 340. In-depth study of various genres (e.g., epic, novel, lyric, film) and problems of genre in French.

FREN 454R : Studies in Author.

W Prerequisite: Fren 340. In-depth study of major French or Francophone authors (e.g., Rabelais, Moliere, Diderot, Balzac).

FREN 455R : Studies in Literary Theory.

W Prerequisite: Fren 340. In-depth study of primary texts by contemporary literary theorists (e.g., Barthes, Genette, structuralism, etc.).

FREN 456R : Francophone Studies.

Prerequisite: Fren 340. Readings from major French-speaking writers from countries outside France, such as Canada, Africa, and the Caribbean.

FREN 490R : Individual Study in French.

F, W, Sp, Su Prerequisite: instructor's consent. Faculty-supervised instruction/research to fit the individual needs of the advanced student. Terms must be established by contract and approved by chair.

FREN 491R : Senior Oral Proficiency Evaluation.

F, W, Sp, Su Evaluation required of all French majors during the senior year and all French-teaching majors and minors before enrolling in Fren 378.

FREN 495 : Senior Portfolio Seminar.

F, W, Sp, Su Prerequisite: Instructor's consent. Fren 321, 322, 340. Capstone experience for French studies majors, including revision and assessment of writing.
