Associate professor of Spanish & Portuguese David Laraway has been appointed as the new department chair of the Department of Philosophy beginning June 1, 2019. Laraway will follow outgoing department chair Joseph Parry (Department of Comparative Arts & Letters), who served as chair for the past three years. Dean Scott Miller said, “I wish to thank Joe Parry for his service as chair during the past three years. Joe will be taking a well-deserved professional development leave and returning to service in his home department. His work in sustaining the Department of Philosophy has been both timely and effective.”
Laraway said of his appointment, “I feel like I can be a good cheerleader for the philosophy department because I’ve seen first-hand the benefits that derive from the serious, systematic study of philosophy. I am looking forward to the assignment.” Miller added, “David is a fine leader who has demonstrated his abilities in the crucible of chair leadership and now shows his willingness to serve for the greater good of the Department of Philosophy. Having worked closely with him, I have the utmost confidence that he will bring a unique blend of strength, humility, wisdom, and savvy to this new role.”
