Teaching Experience

I love teaching and exploring ways to make learning more fun, interactive, and meaningful. My perspective is informed by a diverse array of K-16 teaching experiences. I have also been honored with several awards for excellence in teaching, including the ACTFL-NYSAFLT Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, the Brigham Young University Faculty Women’s Association Teaching Award, the Kansas Foreign Language Teacher of the Year Award, and the U.S.D. 259 Good Apple Award.up

Research

My research interests focus on four major areas:

  •  CREATIVITY & DESIGN: Creativity, design-based pedagogies, experiential learning, and project-based language learning
  • LITERACY: Literacy, transliteracy, biliteracy, and 21st century skills development
  •  TEACHER LEARNING: Curriculum development, professional development, and teacher preparation
  • LEADERSHIP & INNOVATION: Mentoring, leadership, and change in world language education

My current projects include pedagogical work and grant-supported research in four different immersive language learning environments:

  •  Dual Language Immersion (DLI): Literacy development through integrating curricula
  • Foreign Language Student Residences (FLSR): Designing effective learning environments
  • online, Playable Case Study simulations (PCS): Experiential learning and engagement online
  •  Project-based Language Learning (PBLL): Communication across 3 modes via culturally-situated experiental learning

Service

I am a firm believer in the idea that the more one serves, the more capable one becomes. I have devoted much of my career to service on advisory boards, conference planning committees, and curriculum development committees. I have also designed a variety of grant-funded summer institutes and webinars for language resource centers that help world language educators to develop skills in assessment, literacy, leadership, pedagogy, project-based language learning, and technology.
