Teaching Experience

As a wise colleague once put it, “leaving university without taking foreign language courses leaves students ill-prepared for the 21st century.” I firmly believe this to be true and I use my teaching to help students develop skills that will allow them to become global citizens in an ever-interconnected world. I believe this task is best accomplished when students are actively engaged in the classroom and take ownership of their learning. I strive to design my courses around these principles.

Research

My current research focuses on representations of masculinity in Italian cinema and culture. More broadly, my research interests include gender and sexuality studies, disabilities studies, trauma theory, and (trans)national identities. In general, I study Italian literature and (popular) culture, including film, television, and digital media and streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix). I am also interested in the emerging academic medium of the video essay.

Service

In the past, I’ve been heavily involved with organizing national conferences for professional organizations. I enjoy this aspect of academic service because it allows me to interact with a variety of people and to work behind the scenes in planning a successful event. I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when I see my hours of work come to fruition in the form of a conference. Doing the leg work also gives me lots of opportunities to help others when problems arise.
