I teach the personal essay, memoir, literary nonfiction, and creative writing professionalization, but I hope that what I teach will influence how students see and interact with the world no matter what they end up doing professionally. The personal essay is a way of being as much as it is a literary genre, and in the classroom, my aim is to help students see themselves a little more clearly. I publish personal essays, lyric essays, memoir, and other literary nonfiction, as well as articles on the craft and theory of creative writing, and articles on creative writing professionalization. I’ve served as the coordinator for the MFA program since 2019. I’ve also served on the scholarship committee, the English Department Contest committee, and I’ve served as the Creative Writing Minor Coordinator. In all my service, I hope to help students get the most out of their time here at BYU. -CO-editor, Fourth Genre: Explorations in Nonfiction www.joeyfranklin.comTeaching Experience
