Teaching Experience

I LOVE teaching. I started my career teaching 9-12 grade English at Provo High School. I later became the district literacy specialist and then the principal of Provo High School. Working with and learning from teenagers and young adults brings me energy, joy, and great blessings. I’m thrilled that I have the privilege of working at BYU now where I can help with the preparation of future English educators.

I’m interested in all things related to English teaching–strategies for teaching reading and writing, strategies for becoming a better reader and writer, ideas for engaging diverse learners, how best to assess learning. I also have a passion for YA lit and for getting students involved in projects that can enlarge their view and provide opportunities for growth.

Selected Publications

The Kingdom of Little Wounds, ALAN Picks Book Review, The ALAN Review, August 2013.

My Second Life, ALAN Picks Book Review, The ALAN Review, April/May 2016.

Some of my most cherished friendships have been developed while working with others on a focused goal or project. In the academic world, the opportunity to serve provides balance and inspiration.
