Teaching Experience

I teach creative and expository writing. I believe language is about connections, on and off the page or screen. I encourage students to see themselves as writers, and use their art to enrich their lives and the lives of others. I love teaching at BYU because students are in general kind, talented, teachable and ambitious. I have published several successful novels.

I write for children and young adults primarily. I study the literature and the market for children and young adult fiction.

Selected Publications

  • Wolves, Boys and Other Things That Might Kill Me
  • Girls Don’t Fly
  • The Thief of Happy Endings

I mentor students individually and encourage them to create a long lasting writing community with classmates. I hold outdoor activities designed to foster relationships beneficial to students during and beyond their time at the university, while simultaneously helping to relieve some of the anxiety that goes with university life.
