Learning a foreign language is learning how to do things in the target culture. It goes beyond vocabulary and grammar and includes behavioral culture, what do do, how to do it, what to say, and so on. Classroom instruction should focus on student performances of prescribed situations conducted mostly in the target language. My current research focuses on cultural literacy and the intersection of language and culture. I am also interested in Chinese language pedagogy, culinary culture, and Cantonese language and culture. My citizenship focus for the past two decades has been with the Chinese Flagship Center where I have served as Director since 2013. I have also served on various department and college committees.Teaching Experience
