Possible Course Design Models for Remote Teaching

Flipped Classroom Model:  Students obtain instructional input asynchronously, then ask questions, discuss, and practice during class.

Individual Learning Contracts:  Students propose a personalized learning plan based on course learning outcomes and students’ personal interests.  These plans generally include: a list of proposed activities or learning experiences that would help the student make progress toward the learning outcomes; creative products that would demonstrate the student had met learning outcomes; and deadlines for completing the project.  The plan is approved by the instructor.  Regular checkpoints are also negotiated between student and instructor for regular checkpoints, peer collaboration, consultations with the instructor, and submissions of student work.

Learning MenusFor each unit, the instructor creates a menu of learning activities designed to help students meet targeted learning outcomes.  Students must select a certain number of activities from each category and complete them by a pre-determined due date.

Project-based Learning:  Students and the instructor agree on a collaborative project that meets course learning outcomes and also addresses the real world needs of an authentic, public audience.  Students engage in sustained inquiry and ongoing critique, revision, and reflection throughout the project.  The project culminates in a tangible product that is shared with a public audience outside of the classroom.  This approach often includes a strong service learning component.

Or… some combination of the above approaches.
